Leatherman Mut is a multi-tool specially designed for field duty. It comes with a bronze carbon scraper and bolt override tool to allow you to maintain your AR-15 easily. However, it is priced even higher than Leatherman Surge, which comes with more built-in tools and arguably more versatility. So, which one is better? See the comparisons between Leatherman Mut vs Surge below!
Size and Weight
The first thing to note when comparing Leatherman Mut vs Surge is that the Mut has a longer body. When closed, the length is about 5 inches (12.7 cm). It is slightly lighter at 11.2 oz (317.5 grams). The multi-tool has a bit storage in the handle for easy access and safe keeping. There is also a removable carry clip which you can use to attach the multi-tool to your pocket or belt loop without a sheath. You need to remove the clip if you want to put it in a sheath. On the other hand, Leatherman Surge is slightly shorter. It measures 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) when folded. The weight is about 12.5 oz (335 grams). It has a lanyard ring for easy carrying.
Opening and Operation
The next thing to consider when choosing between these two multi-tools is whether you need an outside-accessible design or not. Both of them have been optimized to allow convenient one-handed operation, but Leatherman Mut’s tools are not outside-accessible. In other words, you have to open the entire device in order to use one of the tools.
Leatherman Surge may be faster and more efficient to use because of the outside-accessible design. All the tools can be locked for safe operation. It mimics the functionality of a pocket knife. You can take out individual tools while the device is still closed.
Leatherman Mut comes with 16 built-in tools, which include regular and needlenose pliers, regular wire cutters and hard wire cutters (both of which are replaceable), stranded wire cutters, an electrical crimper, a combo knife, a saw, a replaceable cutting hook, a carabiner/bottle opener, a hammer, and a large bit driver. The distinctive features of the Mut are the bolt override tool, cleaning rod/brush adapter, replaceable carbon scraper, and replaceable firearm disassembly punch. In addition, the bundle comes with a 3/8” wrench and front-sight adjustment accessory.
These features may seem very useful for field duty. If you’d like to have some backup tools for maintaining your weapons when on the field, you can choose this multi-tool. However, people rarely disassemble their weapons on the field because it is risky and inconvenient; whereas when not on the field, using the real set is much more convenient.
Leatherman Surge comes with 21 built-in tools. The similar tools include the regular and needlenose pliers, removable wire cutters and hard wire cutters, stranded wire cutters, electrical crimper, and saw. Leatherman Surge features a wire stripper, plain-edged and serrated knives, spring-action scissors, wood/metal and diamond-coated files, a bit driver, and two screwdrivers. There are also the blade exchanger, a ruler, can and bottle openers, and an awl with a thread loop.
Compared to the Mut, Leatherman Surge offers much more functionality and versatility. The build quality is great. In most cases, you will get more benefits and value from this multi-tool.
